Zukerman is pleasant and punchy in the role, giving us a detective who's awkward enough to be endearing and driven enough to be obnoxious. It's very much an average, by-the-numbers scavenger hunt.įear Street's Ashley Zukerman plays Harvard University professor Robert Langdon, a boastful brainiac of all things religious iconology and symbology. And that may very well be the case for The Lost Symbol, but the pilot episode - "As Above, So Below" - doesn't exactly kick off this caper in crackerjack fashion.

Of course, it might be because his books were big screen Tom Hanks projects for a full decade, but Langdon's adventures feel tailor-made for an episodic format. Given how many Lost clones we suffered in the wake of that show's conclusion, it's actually surprising it took this long to get a Dan Brown book adapted for the small screen. **If you enjoyed this blog, I would love it if you would click the follow button on your way out to subscribe. The premiere of The Lost Symbol, based on the third book in Dan Brown's best-selling Robert Langdon symbologist series, is an earnest but half-cooked puzzler featuring capable, amiable leads and a clunky clockwork plot that offers few surprises.Īfter ABC's Lost went off the air in 2010, networks scrambled to find the next supernatural mystery box series. I hope you enjoyed the review and feel free to post your own thoughts and theories on The Lost Symbol in the comments section below. I’m in for now and excited to see what happens next. That being said, it needs to keep up the pacing and throw in plenty of curve balls along the way to keep things from becoming stale. It has a National Treasure meets The Librarians feel which could pull in a new audience separate from fans of Dan Brown’s works. This show was a lot better than I thought it would be. So am I in or out? Images courtesy of Peacock The mystery is interesting but I’ve seen this type of show before and it needs to be careful about how it approaches the next episodes to keep us coming back for more. That doesn’t mean that we won’t get there, but this show could easily lose steam and its audience if it doesn’t keep the plot exciting and fresh. Nothing truly extraordinary going on just yet. There are some tropes going on already, but I think that we have the opportunity to really explore a young Langdon and see how things developed in the beginning.
So far I like the character dynamics and I think that the cast is promising as well.
The pacing was done extremely well and I was invested in the mystery at the core. Series like this can usually take a while to get going with all of the set-up and world building, but I was pleasantly surprised that we really jumped right into things with the pilot episode. Does The Lost Symbol do enough to earn a watch? Let’s find out… The Pros: Images courtesy of Peacock
